BAI Media announces the Indian Squad for Asian Games 2023
The Badminton Association of India has announced the squad that will compete in the Asian Games in 2023. The team consists of 19 players, out of whom 10 are men and 9 are women. The Association had organized a 4-day trial event in Hyderabad’s Jwala Gutta Academy of Excellence.
A few players made it to the squad based on their global rankings.
PV Sindhu will feature in the Single category, and HS Prannoy will start in Men’s Single category. The doubles category will see the participation of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in Men’s Doubles and Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly in Women’s Doubles.
Trials were mainly held for the remaining spots:
- Three spots in Singles, both categories
- One spot in Doubles, both categories
- Two spots in Mixed Doubles

Tanisha has secured a spot in two categories, namely Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. PV Sindhu will feature only in singles. Kidambi Srikanth is the former world number one player. Lakshya Sen comes to the squad after successfully winning the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Send beat Tze Young from Malaysia to win a Gold Medal for the country. The winning tally was 19-21, 21-9, and 21-16.
Ashmita Chaliha also had to compete in the 4-day selection trial to cement her spot in the squad.
Players who have secured a spot in their ranking order are making the squad interesting. However, odds on badminton betting sites are likely to favor players based on how they have performed in the sport. For instance, Arjun and Kapila made it to the squad after demonstrating a better game difference.
Gopichand and Jolly add to the doubles, with Ashwini and Tanisha giving their best shot.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the president of the association, chairs the BAI. The announcement for the squad comes days after the Association expanded the Internal Complaints Committee for 2022–2026.
Draw for the trials that occurred on May 3, 2023, after which the 4-day period commenced. The event began on May 4, 2023, and concluded on May 7, 2023. The scoring system was based on the three games with the highest total of 21 points. A thirty-point extension was contemplated. On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, players were permitted to practice at 10 a.m.
Fans have begun speculating on how the Asian Games 2023 will roll out. Many are surprised not to see Suraj Goala in the squad, while others hope Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will shine at the tournament.
