Cal Makar Bags the Conn Smythe Trophy in Playoffs
Cale Makar was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner during the Stanley Cup Final on June 26. Makar’s seven points helped the Avalanche win their first Stanley Cup since 2001. His three goals and four assists made him the Most Valuable Player in the after-match ceremony during the Sunday playoff game.
This Sunday, the Colorado Avalanche faced the Tampa Bay Lightning for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Avalanche were able to utilize the 3-2 lead from the last five games for a six-game victory. They finished the finals 4-2 against the Lightning and held the Stanley Cup Trophy for the first in nearly two decades.
The game spotlight was on Cale Makar, who was voted for Conn Smythe Trophy for his impeccable performance during the Finals. With this honor, Makar becomes the third defenceman in the history of the NHL to win both Conn Smyth and Norris Trophies in the same season, next to Bobby Orr (1970, 1972) and Lidstrom (2002).
And what’s more, the Avalanche star is the seventh defenceman to win the Conn Smythe Trophy in nearly three decades. The other six are Brian Leetch (New York Rangers, 1994), Scott Stevens (New Jersey Devils, 2000), Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit Red Wings, 2002), Scott Niedermayer (Anaheim Ducks, 2007), Duncan Keith (Chicago Blackhawks, 2015), and Victor Hedman (Lightning, 2020). He is also the only Avalanche defenseman on this list.
Maker also finished this postseason with 29 points, including eight goals, and 21 assists, in 19 games. It is also the second-most by a defenseman in a season, and Leetch tops the list with 34 points in 23 games with 11 goals and 23 assists during the 1993-94 season.
Maker was also instrumental in their first-round win against the Nashville Predators. With 3 goals and 7 assists, he accounted for 10 points, becoming the first-ever defenseman to do it through just four games in the history of the NHL.
