NFL Monday Night Football Betting – Colts need to leave disappointment behind vs. Chargers
Well, it would be hard to be in a more difficult psychological situation than the Indianapolis Colts are in right now. One week, they gave up 33 points in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys. And in the next week, they are blowing a 33-point lead against the Minnesota Vikings.
So BetOnline customers have to be wondering what kind of shape they could possibly be in to take the field against the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night.
Remember that the Chargers are a team that is battling for a playoff spot, and that’s a position they did not reach last season. Plus, they have an offense that is difficult for even capable stop units to deal with.
Jeff Saturday, who has had a roller coaster ride as the interim head coach, is turning to a veteran who has not seen action to date. Nick Foles will get the start at quarterback in place of Matt Ryan as the Colts attempt to pull off an upset as a home underdog.
Indianapolis comes into this game with a record of 4-9-1 straight up and 6–8 against the football pointspread. The Chargers are 8–6 straight up and 9–5 versus the number.
The game will be televised on ESPN and kick-off at 8:15 PM Eastern time at Lucas Oil Stadium.
In the NFL Monday night odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetOnline, the Chargers are laying points on the road:-
Los Angeles Chargers -3.5 (-106)
Indianapolis Colts +3.5 (-114)
Over 44.5 points -110
Under 44.5 points -110
Foles started one game for the Chicago Bears last season. While the aforementioned Ryan is a former NFL MVP, Foles was the Super Bowl MVP when he led the Philadelphia Eagles to victory over New England. His offensive coordinator at the time was Frank Reich, who brought him to Indianapolis but was fired.
Even as the decision was made to give Sam Ehlinger some time as the starter in place of Ryan, who is not expected to be seen for the rest of the campaign, Foles was ignored. Well, now he gets an opportunity to show that he should stick around in the National Football League for a while
The Colts have been outscored by a 72–9 margin in the second halves of the last two games. Apparently, the opponents have outfoxed Saturday when it comes to adjustments. Ryan had experienced such a thing when his Atlanta Falcons blew a 28–3 lead in a Super Bowl against the Patriots. But with four interceptions and 13 sacks since he re-assumed the starters role, we have probably seen enough from him.
Indianapolis does have a formidable defense. And they are capable of taking big plays away. But if you look at Justin Herbert’s numbers this season, even though he’s already thrown for over 4000 yards, he is way down the list for intended air yards per attempt at 6.3. So he’s very used to throwing underneath the coverage. And he has Keenan Allen and Mike Williams at his disposal, and that’s enough for any secondary to worry about.
If you are the Colts right now, you wonder if your team can play four quarters of football. They didn’t do it against the Dallas Cowboys and certainly did not against the Minnesota Vikings. They have been frustrating in that regard, although they have shown themselves capable of a surprise, as they pulled off when they beat the Kansas City Chiefs. So, the odds at football betting sites may vary in the near future.
At this point in the 2022 season, they know they are getting a new head coach. They don’t know who he is or where he will come from. But chances are, it won’t be Saturday, which has taken a lot of abuse from the pundits as well as those who are advocating for minority hiring in the NFL. Brandon Staley‘s defense can bring the heat, and certainly, his scheme reduces the possibility of explosive plays. So Foles will probably be sitting in a situation similar to the one he had with the Bears.
And the Bolts have gotten to this point without running the ball very much. Yes, we understand that Indy might be able to travel by land against this Chargers team. That’s the kind of thing that is a byproduct of playing safeties deep. But we can’t trust the Colts here. So we’re going to lay the points with the road favorite.
