Djokovic and Swiatek lead United Cup ahead of Australian Open
The United Cup is scheduled to happen as a warm-up event ahead of the Australian Open. It will be live from December 29, 2023, to January 7, 2024. It will be a mixed event in Sydney and Perth. Djokovic and Iga Swiatek are reported to lead the charts for the tennis event.
Having said that, there are teams that have earned the tag of top seeds with Team Poland at the top. It has Swiatek and Hubert leading the team for the 2024 edition. Number 2-seeded are from Greece – Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari.
The US will defend the title and is seeded number three. The team has Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz. Carolina Garcia and Adrian Mannarino from France for the 4th spot follow them. Marketa and Jiri will hail from the Czech Republic.
Four teams are making their debuts this edition:
- Serbia – Djokovic and Olga Danilovic
- Canada – Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez
- China – Qinwen Zheng and Zhizhen Zhang
- Netherlands – Tallon Griekspoor and Arantxa Rus
Hubert is coming fresh from losing the Round of 32 of the Japan Open to Zhang. The final tally was 3-6, 6-4, and 7-6 against him. His win percentage remained on the lower side, at 64%. However, that was by a narrow margin, as the opponent brought up 67% in the win.
The story is different for Swiatek, who made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Kudermetova. The final tally was 2-6, 6-2, and 4-6 against her.
Djokovic will open the United Cup; however, fans are not entirely pleased with the fact that Rafael Nadal has been ruled out of the tournament. This development comes days after it was shared that Nadal will make a comeback to the Grand Slam with the Australian Open.
