Amidst so much controversy involving their owner, Dan Snyder, the Washington Commanders have risen above it and put together quite an impressive run at a playoff spot. The Giants got off to a hot start, and Brian Daboll, who came over from the Buffalo Bills, where he was the offensive coordinator, was receiving a lot of buzz for the coach of the year award. But they both may have made a mistake early in the schedule when he shut some receivers out of the rotation. We say that because now he’s not left with many of them. Sterling Shepard is out. Wan’Dale Robinson is out. Kadarius Toney is now with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kenny Golladay, a high-priced wideout who has produced very little, is listed as questionable.
Daniel Bellinger, the rookie tight end, is just coming off injured reserve after a bizarre eye injury. And you just can’t throw the ball to Darius Slayton on every play. As a matter of fact, we wonder if Daniel Jones will be able to throw the ball to Slayton at all, considering that the speedster got ill, missed some practice, and it’s also listed as questionable on the latest report.
The good news is that on the offensive line, the Giants are healthier. Center Jon Feliciano and tackle Evan Neal should be good to go. All of this has been a real source of anxiety for this team. Still, we wonder about the weaponry.
Jones has not progressed to the point where the Giants could definitely see that he is their future at quarterback. He’s thrown just ten touchdown passes, and much of his usefulness has been on the ground, where he’s gained 451 yards. Saquon Barkley is the stud in the backfield, with 982 yards, but he’s had a lack of production, which coincides with some of these injury problems at receiver, where he has only had 87 total yards – combined rushing and receiving – over the last two games.

Washington is one of those teams where they don’t really have glowing numbers, but they have managed to get the job done to the extent that they have won six of their last seven games, going 6-0-1 against the number over that stretch.
This team has not reached 400 yards on offense all season long. Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson – who is out for this game – have both averaged under four yards per carry. And Taylor Heinicke has very modest numbers, including a 7–5 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions. Yet here they are.
Washington has held its last six opponents to an average of 267 yards per game. Their defense, which was very weak at the beginning of the season, is now fourth best on third-down situations, permitting only 33.3% conversions.
And Heinicke is someone all these guys want to follow. We acknowledge that he doesn’t get the ball very far downfield, but as long as this team keeps winning, head coach Ron Rivera will not change jockeys on this horse. That means Carson Wentz will not see the field unless trouble arises.
Right now, the Giants are 7–4, with Washington at 7-5. Since NFC East leader Philadelphia has only one loss, these teams are essentially battling for a wildcard position. They are definitely going in different directions, and with a minus-7 point differential, the Giants really don’t look like much of a contender right now. So we are okay with laying a small number with the Commanders.
