Goldman Sachs VP Swindles Firm to Pay Off Poker Debt
A senior officer of the global investment firm Goldman Sachs, Ashwani Jhunjhunwala was arrested by the Bengaluru Police on Tuesday. He was trying to fraud the firm for Rs. 38 crore to overcome his financial losses while playing the online poker game. He was trying to transfer Rs 38 crore (the US $5.4 million) in the account of Hong Kong bank.
The 36 years old man Ashwini Jhunjhunwala is the Vice President of Goldman Sachs. He is basically from Kolkata and lives in Murugeshpalya in Bengaluru with his wife, child and father. He is an MBA from IBS-Hyderabad and had worked for other companies before joining to Goldman Sachs in 2015. He holds an experience of 14 years in capital market operation and project management.
A former employee of Goldman Sachs Vedant Rungta, who leaves in Bagalur Main Road Bengaluru was also arrested for helping his colleague and provoking him to transfer the amount of $400,000 to pay off his debt.
As per the Bengaluru Police, the amount was being transferred to the Hong Kong-based bank account, which was being stopped and transferred back to the Goldman Sachs account. Vedant Rungta, the 28 years old man had been discharged 18 months ago for fraud suspects from the company. Vedant has started his career as an intern, and he was posted as the Vice-President (brokerage) over seven years.
The legal head department of Goldman Sachs, Abhishek Parsheera has filed a complaint in Marathahalli Police station Bengaluru on September 8. Bhaskar Rao, the police commissioner told that the police were quick enough to know about the beneficiary account, which helped them to revert the transaction to Goldman Sachs account.
According to the police, the account in Hong Kong is a private account, but the name of the account holder was not disclosed.
The amount was transferred from Goldman Sachs on September 2, and one of the junior employees warned against Jhunjhunwala. Before the cheaters could run away with the money, the amount was rooted back to the company’s account. Before doing any transaction, Jhunjhunwala had gained accessed to Gaurav Mishra’s computer for the payment. He had also set up a third-party standard to do the settlement with Synergy Wisdom Ltd, Hong Kong. Jhunjhunwala had transferred the amount in two instalments on September 4 to Synergy Wisdom Ltd.
Ashish Jhunjhunwala has been dismissed from Goldman Sachs.
