IOC Session permits LA28’s proposal for 5 new Olympic sports
The Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) will have five additional sports. The IOC Session recently approved LA28’s proposal for the new sports.
These sports include cricket (T20), softball/baseball, lacrosse (sixes), squash, and flag football. The 141st Session of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) took the decision recently.
The IOC’s EB (Executive Board) and Olympic Programme Commission (OPC) carefully reviewed and supported the proposal. Cricket, lacrosse, and baseball/softball will be making a return to the Olympics.
Squash and flag football will be making their first Olympic appearances. Here is a summary of the previous appearances of the sports at the Olympic Games.
- Softball and Baseball have been a part of several Olympics, including the 2020 Tokyo
- Cricket was a part of the Olympic Games in Paris 1900
- Lacrosse was a part of the Olympics at London 1908 and St Louis 1904
Thomas Bach, the IOC President, talked about the new announcement. According to Bach, the new sports fall in line with the sports culture in America. The sports will showcase the American spirit to the world while presenting international sports to the US. This has a great impact on online sports betting sites.
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will be unique because of these additions. Moreover, it will help the Olympic Movement interact with new fan and athlete communities across the world, added the IOC President.
The IOC established several evaluation criteria before finalizing the sports. It weighed in factors like gender equality, existing facilities, etc. The IOC Session also considered multiple suggestions by the Executive Board regarding weightlifting and modern pentathlon.
After being removed from the event, the sports are now a part of the LA28 Olympics. The IOC Session made its final decision on 28 more sports back in February 2022. Given the popularity of the newly added sports, the 2028 LA Olympic Games is expected to garner a massive viewer base.
