NFL Betting Odds – Jets Feeling Good Ahead of Encounter with Bengals… Is it too Good?
You can bet that the Cincinnati Bengals will come out with some resolve as they take the field in the Meadowlands on Sunday. The Super Bowl representative of the AFC has lost the first two games of the season. Even after securing the services of various starting offensive linemen, they still can’t protect their quarterback.
Meanwhile, the New York Jets would seem to be sky-high after a tremendous comeback victory over the Cleveland Browns last week. Taking advantage of some strategic gaffes and special-teams mistakes, the Jets scored two touchdowns in the last two minutes, with Joe Flacco throwing four TD’s on the day.
So what can BetOnline customers expect out of this matchup? We’ll find out at 1 PM Eastern time at MetLife Stadium.
In their second year under head coach Robet Saleh, the Jets found themselves sputtering on the offensive end in their opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Fans were already calling for a quarterback switch, as Joe Flacco is filling in for injured starter Zach Wilson but has Mike White waiting in the wings.
Interestingly enough, White had a career game last year against Cincinnati, completing 37 of 45 passes for 405 yards in a 34-31 shocker. So fans were kind of anxious to see him. But Saleh stood by his veteran quarterback and seemed to be happy about the decision.
But how many times can they draw from that well? And can Cincinnati rebound from these two defeats, first a division game to Pittsburgh where they lost their long snapper, and then a 20-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in which Joe Burrow was sacked six times?
In the betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at various NFL betting sites like BetOnline, Cincinnati is a solid favorite on the road:-
Cincinnati Bengals -6
New York Jets +6
Over 45 points -110
Under 45 points -110
We’re not really sure how good a quarterback Wilson is, but when he comes back from his injury, he’ll have some weapons at his disposal. Corey Davis hauled in a 66-yard touchdown against the Browns, while rookie first-round draft pick Garrett Wilson caught eight passes for 102 yards and had the winning touchdown.
The Jets have lost two left tackles, but even with an immobile quarterback against a pretty good pass rush, they only gave up two sacks last week. And they threw the ball 75% of the time.
But these Bengals have the look of a team that just hasn’t gotten started yet. You have to understand that last year, Burrow averaged more yards per attempt than any other quarterback in the NFL, even though he was constantly under siege. He has been sacked 13 times thus far and pressured 34 times. With only 199 yards coming out of 36 attempts in Dallas, you could tell that he was required to get rid of the ball in a hurry against the Cowboys and their premier pass-rusher, Micah Parsons.
He is very rarely operating out of a clean pocket, but when he is allowed a little time, he has a set of wide receivers that compared to any in football. That includes Ja’Marr Chase, who was limited to just 54 yards against Dallas. This Jets secondary is a work in progress, so we are not sure about their ability to hold off Cincinnati for very long. And the Bengals defense is; largely holding up its end of the deal; they rank fourth in the NFL in yards allowed per drive through the first two games. And let’s keep firmly in mind that even though Flacco threw for 307 yards last week, he did it on 59 attempts. So these guys are really playing small ball.
This line has been moving upward a little. Maybe the Jets have a state of euphoria that’s lasted a bit too long. And we are not sure that Flacco is in an actual period of rebirth. Cincinnati has played seven straight games under the total, but we prefer to lay the points in what is a measured recommendation.
