The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a tremendous disappointment as they took it on the chin from the Washington Commanders and blew their undefeated season. But they can’t think about that now because other teams like the New York Giants are breathing down their necks in the NFC East.

Will this balance be the difference that will help them go a long way in the playoffs?

The Colts benched Matt Ryan, fired offensive coordinator Marcus Brady, then fired head coach Frank Reich, and handed the job over to Jeff Saturday, a former All-Pro center with the franchise who was not on the coaching staff. That drew a lot of criticism, some of the harshest coming from Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher.
But Saturday decided he wanted Ryan back in the lineup, and the former MVP threw for 222 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground. They were powered by Jonathan Taylor, last year’s rushing leader, who had 147 yards. So everything fell into place, but the Colts still needed to come from behind with five minutes to go to pull out the win against a substandard Las Vegas squad.
Can Ryan duplicate a mistake-free effort? That might be a difficult thing to do. For one thing, he led the league in turnovers and was sacked more than any other NFL quarterback before he was benched in favor of Sam Ehlinger. And the Eagles lead the league in turnovers forced. So they feast on the kind of stuff that he, well, does a lot.
We do admit that Indy can move the chains against Philly’s defense, which allows 5.2 yards a carry. But what about when they get down to the red zone? Not sure about that. If the Eagles really are championship-caliber, they will bounce back with emphasis after their loss, especially as the Giants could tie them for the division lead if they don’t win here.
