Terra Wortmann Open will see four contests this Thursday on OWL Arena. All lights will be on Jannik Sinner, Hubert Hurkacz, Alexander Zverev, and Christopher Eubanks as they lock horns with Jan-Lennard Struff, Marcos Giron, Arthur Fils, and Zhizhen Zhang, respectively.
Jan-Lennard Struff and Jannik Sinner will meet in the quarterfinals for the third time in their careers. Presently ranked first in the world The quarterfinals were reached by Sinner with victories over Tallon Griekspoor (6-78, 6-3, 6-2) and Fabian Marozsan (6-4, 6-74, 6-3).
Last year, Sinner had his greatest success by winning the Australian Open, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in the final. He also triumphed in Rotterdam, beating Alex De Minaur 7-5 6-4, and in Miami, beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 6-1.
After beating Luciano Darderi 6-72, 7-5, 7-610 and Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4, Struff advanced to the quarterfinals, where he is ranked no. 41. With a perfect 4-0 record on grass, Struff’s 2024 record is 21-12. His greatest performance of the year was winning the Munich championship after a 7-5, 6-3 final victory over Taylor Fritz. Jannik Sinner and Jan-Lennard Struff will meet for the third time in their careers. Despite Sinner’s 2-0 record, the two have never played each other on grass.
Arthur Fils will be facing Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals for the second time in their careers. Alexander advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-65 and Oscar Otte 6-75, 6-3, 6-4. He is ranked no. 4. In 2024, Zverev’s record is 36-10, with a perfect 2-0 record on grass. His finest performance of the season was winning the championship in Australia by defeating Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(3) 7-6(6) 6-4 in the final and in Rome by defeating Nicolas Jarry 6-4 7-5.
Hubert Hurkacz and Marcos Giron will meet in the quarterfinals for the second time in their careers. After beating Flavio Cobolli 7-5 7-62 and James Duckworth 7-63 6-4, Hubert, who is ranked no. 9, advanced to the quarterfinals. Giron advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-65 and Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Giron is ranked 53. As per predictions, Hubert Hurkacz should come out on top in two sets.
Zhizhen Zhang will face Christopher Eubanks in the quarterfinals for the first time in their careers.
Christopher advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Pedro Martinez Portero 6-3 6-4 and Alexander Bublik 7-65 4-6 6-3. Christopher is ranked no. 44 in the world. In advancing to the quarterfinals, Zhizhen defeated Sebastian Ofner 7-68 6-73 6-4 and Daniil Medvedev 6-3 2-6 7-65, bringing their career-high ranking to number 42.
Since Christopher Eubanks and Zhizhen Zhang have never faced off in a main tour bout, they do not have a head-to-head record.
The Terra Wortmann Open tournament will end on June 23, 2024. Interestingly, it is one of eight grass-court events in the tennis calendar and was re-categorized as an ATP 500 tournament back in 2015.
