Pro Football Picks – Jets-Bears: Who’s got the better backup QB?
The New York Jets are likely to struggle offensively these days. They have been very banged up on the offensive line, and as BetOnline patrons probably know by now, Breece Hall, who was having a standout rookie year, is out for the rest of the season. Somewhere along the line, James Robinson is expected to retrieve some of the form he showed in the better days of Jacksonville. Or is he? Robinson is a healthy scratch for this game. Who knows – he could be like many of those fighters who get banged around early in their career and quit while they’re young. Not to alarm anybody.
The Jets are unquestionably deflated a little. They did a good job defensively last Sunday, keeping the New England offense out of the end zone. And then they had to go and lose the game on a special teams play as the clock was running out. In case you didn’t see it, the Jets punted in the final 20 seconds of the game, and we’re certain they fully expected that they are going into overtime. Instead, Marcus Jones took it 84 yards to the house, and they were only a few ticks left. Wilson had a horrible second half, completing 4 out of 11 passes for twelve yards, and he was sacked six times by the Patriots.
You really have to consider a change when something like that happens.
And so head coach Robert Saleh had reached out to Mike White, who had a shining moment last season when he threw for 405 yards against the eventual AFC champion Bengals – in just his first start! It seems that the fans and the media are in the tank for White as the guy who gives the Jets the best chance to follow through and make the playoffs.
And they are favored in the pro football betting odds coming into a Sunday home game against the Chicago Bears (1 PM ET):-
New York Jets -6.5
Chicago Bears +6.5
Over 38 Points -110
Under 38 Points -110
The Bears lost Justin Fields to a shoulder injury this week. It’s his non-throwing shoulder, but he’s indicated that it hurts him on his follow-throughs. So he’s inactive, and who knows what will happen from here? Chicago leads the NFL in rushing, and Fields has 834 yards, but if they keep calling runs for him, he will absorb a lot more punishment. So that’s the dilemma.
Enter Trevioe Siemian, who has a lot of experience in the NFL. And he started as recently as a year ago with New Orleans (for an injured Jameis Winston). Siemian is not going to be part of this ground game. So the duo of Khalil Herbert and David Montgomery are going to have to carry the full load.
We are pretty confident that New York is going to keep Siemian in check. Only three teams in the NFL have held opposing quarterbacks to a lower passer rating. And that’s a real credit to Saleh, who, of course, was defensive coordinator in San Francisco, then had to endure a lot of pain while his stop unit acted like a sieve last season. Now, it will be the strongest unit on the field on Sunday and this has led to a high rise in betting odds at many football betting sites. That’s what we think makes a difference in the Jets’ favor. And we kind of like the UNDER as well.
