Significant Disagreement in Ongoing Negotiations Between Alonso and Mets (Report)
John Heyman reported on the New York Post about a sizeable gap between Pete Alonso and the Mets.
While New York seems to be a likely destination for Alonso, the Mets now appear to have many alternatives for their first base. There is a contingency plan for the Mets if Pete Alonso departs.
The Current State of Talks Between Alonso and the Mets
The free agent slugger, Pete Alonso, and the New York Mets are far apart in their negotiations about the team’s return. There can be a reunion with the two sides, still having some serious work to conduct. According to the insider at MLB Network, John Heyman, there seems to be a “sizeable gap” in discussions between Alonso and the Mets regarding the return of the slugger on the free agent deal. He reported in the New York Post that the sizeable gap does not mean that the player is gone but it also does not signify any quick deal appearing at hand.
David Stearns, the President of baseball operations for New York Mets previously reported that the team is excited to bring back Alonso in free agency.
Despite the activities of the free agent across the majors to start the off-season, Alonso still has not been signed. The teams, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN, are hesitant to give the slugger a long term deal.
Potential Alternatives for the Mets at First Base
Heyman expressed that the Mets might move Mark Vientos, the postseason standout, to first base, leaving an open competition for third base among Mets No. 6 Ronny Maurico, Brett Baty, and others.
Currently the Mets have Mark Vientos at third base. They are deciding to move the third baseman to first to allow Bregman to join. Adding Bregman and putting Vientos to first base would mean that the Mets are also moving on from its first baseman Pete Alonso. However, that may not be the case according to Metsmerized Online Mike Mayer. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that the Mets are one of the clubs who are supporting Bregman to a greater degree. Teams like the Red Sox, the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Tigers are backing Bregman.
Bregman is a two-time World Series and a two-time All-Star champ who has spent his career of nine years with the Astros. Later, he rejected the six-year contract from Houston, and it appears likely that his career will move on elsewhere.
As for Alonso, the Mets have introduced the $765 million player, Juan Soto, and are still engaged with their first baseman, Pete Alonso.
With the current negotiations creating uncertainty around Alonso’s future, many betting enthusiasts are turning to Top MLB Betting Sites for the updated betting odds on where he may land next, or how the Mets’ roster changes could impact their season.
